It was founded by a local businessman and opened in 1970, and the collection centers on modern Japanese painting, especially Yokoyama Taikan. But the reason for its fame is the garden.
An American magazine devoted to Japanese gardens has ranked it the best in the country for more than twenty years running. The part that surprises visitors is that you never set foot in it.
