Adachi Bijutsukan, the Adachi Museum of Art, is a Shimane museum whose garden is viewed from indoors, not walked through.
The Adachi Museum of Art stands in Yasugi, Shimane, far from any major city. It opened in 1970 and holds modern Japanese paintings, above all works by Yokoyama Taikan. It is best known for its garden, which an American specialist magazine has ranked the best in Japan for over twenty consecutive years. You cannot walk in the garden. You look at it through the building's windows, which are framed to work as picture frames.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
The Adachi Museum of Art is in Yasugi, in Shimane prefecture, which is a long way from Tokyo or Kyoto, and people still go. It was founded by a local businessman and opened in 1970, and the collection centers on modern Japanese painting, especially Yokoyama Taikan. But the reason for its fame is the garden.
An American magazine devoted to Japanese gardens has ranked it the best in the country for more than twenty years running. The part that surprises visitors is that you never set foot in it. The garden is designed to be seen from inside the building, through windows deliberately shaped so that the view sits in them like a hanging scroll.
One window is even called the living framed painting. The distant mountains behind are borrowed scenery, treated as part of the composition even though they belong to no one. Gardeners work on it every morning before opening. So it is a garden in the sense that a painting is a landscape: something arranged to be looked at from one place, not wandered through.

In one line
In 30 seconds
As a short speech
Questions people actually ask
QWhy can't you go into the garden?
ABecause it is composed for a viewpoint. Paths and footprints would break the picture, and the gravel and moss are raked and trimmed to look right from inside. It is closer to a large-scale painting than to a park.
QIs the ranking official?
AIt is from an American specialist magazine on Japanese gardening, not from the Japanese government or UNESCO. It is a respected list in its field, but it is one magazine's ranking, and the museum states it as such.
QIs it worth the trip if I am not interested in painting?
AMany visitors come only for the garden, and that is a normal way to visit. The view changes with the seasons, so some people come back at a different time of year.
A common misunderstanding
MYTHA famous Japanese garden is something you stroll through.
FACTMany are, but this one is not. It is composed to be viewed from fixed points inside the building, and visitors never enter it. The mountains behind are borrowed into the composition.
