That was the New Yam Festival in my village. It's an Igbo celebration at the end of the rainy season, when the yams are harvested. 村のニューヤム祭りだよ。雨季の終わり、ヤムイモを収穫する時期のイボ人のお祭りなんだ。

So it's a kind of harvest festival? じゃあ、収穫祭みたいなもの？
Chidi
Exactly. Traditionally, nobody eats the new yams before the festival. Then a respected elder eats the first one, and everyone celebrates. そのとおり。伝統的に、お祭りの前は誰も新しいヤムイモを食べないんだ。それから尊敬されている長老が最初の一つを食べて、みんなでお祝いする。

What happens during the day? その日はどんなことをするの？
Chidi
There's music, dancing, masquerades and loads of food. Yam porridge, pounded yam with soup... I ate far too much. 音楽に踊り、仮面の舞、それに食べ物が山ほど。ヤムイモのおかゆ、スープを添えたつきヤム…。食べすぎたよ。

I try to. I live in Lagos now, so it's a long drive, but my grandmother would be very upset if I missed it. What about New Zealand? Do you have anything similar? できるだけね。今はラゴスに住んでるから車で長い道のりだけど、行かなかったら祖母がすごく悲しむから。ニュージーランドはどう？似たようなものはある？

Sort of. We have Matariki. It's the Māori New Year, in the middle of winter. It's been a public holiday since 2022. ちょっとね。マタリキがあるよ。マオリの新年で、真冬にあるの。2022年から祝日になったんだ。

How do people celebrate it? どうやってお祝いするの？

When a group of stars called Matariki appears in the sky, people remember those who have died, share food and make plans for the year ahead. マタリキと呼ばれる星の集まりが空に現れると、亡くなった人をしのんで、食事を分け合って、新しい一年の計画を立てるの。
Chidi
That sounds really meaningful. すごく意味のあるお祭りだね。
Hannah
It is. It's quieter than your festival, though. Not as much dancing! うん。でもあなたのお祭りより静かだよ。踊りはそんなにないかな！
Chidi
