Where Do You Get Your News?
Olivia(UK)Otieno(Kenya)
Olivia
Otieno, where do you actually get your news these days? I realised the other day that I haven't bought a newspaper in years.
Otieno
Honestly, mostly from social media — X, WhatsApp groups, sometimes TikTok. Kenyans are very active online, so news tends to break there first.
Olivia
That's what worries me, though. Things spread so quickly that nobody stops to check whether they're true.
Otieno
I agree, it's a double-edged sword. On the one hand, ordinary people can report things the mainstream media ignores. On the other, rumours travel just as fast as facts — sometimes faster.
Olivia
And the algorithms don't help. They show you whatever keeps you scrolling, which usually means whatever makes you angry.
Otieno
Exactly. I've noticed that if I click on one dramatic story, my feed is full of similar stuff for days. It's like living in an echo chamber.
Olivia
So how do you deal with it? Do you have any rules for yourself?
Otieno
A few. If something seems shocking, I wait before sharing it. Usually within a couple of hours, someone has either confirmed it or debunked it.
Olivia
That's sensible. I'm guilty of sharing things far too quickly, and then I have to sheepishly delete them.
Otieno
We've all done it. My uncle forwards everything to our family WhatsApp group — miracle cures, fake government announcements, you name it.
Olivia
Ha! Every family has one of those. Do you ever correct him?
Otieno
I used to, but it caused arguments. Now I just send him a link from a reliable source and say nothing else. He's getting better, slowly.
Olivia
That's very diplomatic. I suppose the deeper issue is that traditional media has lost a lot of trust, so people look elsewhere.
Otieno
Partly, yes. But I don't think the answer is going back to only reading newspapers. It's more about media literacy — teaching people, especially young people, how to judge a source.
Olivia
I couldn't agree more. We never learned anything like that at school.
Otieno
Neither did we. Some schools are starting to teach it now, which is encouraging.
Olivia
Well, if nothing else, I'm going to wait two hours before sharing anything from now on. Your rule.
Otieno
Feel free to borrow it. Just don't tell my uncle — he'd forward it to fifty people.
