My First Job

Chris(USA)Wanjiru(Kenya)

Chris
Wanjiru, what was your first job?
Wanjiru
I worked at my aunt's shop in Nairobi during the school holidays. I was about fifteen.
Chris
What did you sell?
Wanjiru
Everything — sugar, soap, bread, phone credit. People came in all day.
Chris
Did you get paid?
Wanjiru
A little. But honestly, the best part was learning how to talk to customers. I was really shy before that.
Chris
I can imagine. Customers can be tough.
Wanjiru
Some of them, yes. One old man came in every morning and argued about the price of milk. Every single morning!
Chris
Ha! Did you ever win?
Wanjiru
Never. But by the end of the holidays, we were friends. He used to say, "Sawa, sawa. You're a good businesswoman."
Chris
"Sawa" means OK, right?
Wanjiru
Exactly. It's Swahili. What about you, Chris? What was your first job?
Chris
I delivered newspapers in my neighborhood. I had to get up at five a.m. and ride my bike around in the dark.
Wanjiru
Five a.m.! That's dedication.
Chris
Not really. My parents made me do it. But it taught me to be on time.
