Too Many Tourists?
Kai(USA (Hawaii))Siobhán(Ireland)
Kai
Siobhán, you're from Dublin, right? Has tourism changed the city much?
Siobhán
Ah, massively. When I was a kid, Temple Bar was just a bit of a quirky area. Now it's packed with tourists every night, and the prices are mad.
Kai
It's the same here in Hawaii. Tourism is one of our biggest industries, so we depend on it, but some beaches are so crowded that locals have stopped going.
Siobhán
That's the tricky part, isn't it? You can't just tell people not to come, because so many jobs depend on them.
Kai
Exactly. My cousin works at a hotel in Waikiki, and she'd lose her job without tourists. But housing is another issue. Lots of homes have become holiday rentals, so rents have gone through the roof.
Siobhán
We have exactly the same problem. Young people in Dublin can barely afford to rent a room, never mind buy a house.
Kai
Some places are trying to manage it. I've read that a few popular destinations now charge visitors an extra fee.
Siobhán
Venice does that for day-trippers, doesn't it? I think it's fair enough, as long as the money actually goes back into the community.
Kai
Totally. I also think tourists themselves could be a bit more thoughtful — like visiting outside peak season, or staying somewhere other than the famous spots.
Siobhán
Yeah. The west of Ireland is gorgeous, and loads of people never leave Dublin. They'd have a far better time in Galway or Kerry.
Kai
Same with Hawaii. Everyone goes to Waikiki, but there's so much more to see if you're respectful and take your time.
Siobhán
I suppose the goal isn't fewer tourists, really. It's better tourism.
Kai
That's a good way of putting it. You should put that on a T-shirt.
Siobhán
Ah, stop. I'd sell about three of them.

Kai の "gone through the roof" はひと息につながります。
