The Rubbish Above Our Heads
Roughly how fast does space debris travel in low Earth orbit?
- About 0.8 km per second
- About 7 to 8 km per second
- About 70 km per second
About 7 to 8 km per second — 答えは b の「秒速約7〜8キロ」。

Mia
Hello and welcome to 6 Minute Talk. I'm Mia.
Ken
And I'm Ken. Mia, when you look up at the night sky, what do you see?
Mia
Stars, the moon... and sometimes a moving light that turns out to be a satellite.
Ken
Exactly. A satellite is a machine sent into space to travel around the Earth. And today we're talking about what happens when satellites and rockets turn into rubbish: space junk.
Mia
But first, our quiz. Roughly how fast does space debris travel in low Earth orbit? a) about 0.8 kilometres per second, b) about 7 to 8 kilometres per second, or c) about 70 kilometres per second?
Ken
Seventy sounds crazy, so I'll say 0.8. 70
Mia
We'll find out at the end. So, Ken, what exactly is space debris?
Ken
Debris means broken pieces of something that's been destroyed. In space, it includes old satellites that don't work any more, parts of rockets, and tiny pieces from explosions and crashes. debris
Mia
And all of it is in orbit — moving around the Earth in a curved path, again and again.
Ken
Right. The problem is that space is getting crowded. Thousands of satellites have been launched, and tens of thousands of pieces of debris are being tracked.
Mia
What happens if two objects collide? To collide means to hit each other while moving.
Ken
Because they're moving so fast, even a tiny piece can cause serious damage. And a crash creates even more pieces.
Mia
So it could become a chain reaction — one event causing another, and another.
Ken
Exactly. A NASA scientist called Donald Kessler warned about this in the late 1970s. It's sometimes called the Kessler syndrome.
Mia
That sounds scary. Is anyone trying to clean up space?
Ken
Yes. Space agencies track debris so that the International Space Station can move out of the way if something comes too close. And several companies — including some Japanese ones — are testing ways to capture old satellites.
Mia
So to track something means to follow where it goes. Now, back to the quiz. Ken said 0.8 kilometres per second, but the answer is b) about 7 to 8 kilometres per second. That's more than 25,000 kilometres an hour, according to NASA. track
Ken
Wow. No wonder a tiny piece can be so dangerous.
Mia
Let's review today's words: satellite, debris, orbit, collide, chain reaction and track.
Ken
That's all for today. Goodbye — and keep looking up!
