トーク

Mia
Hello and welcome to 6 Minute Talk. I'm Mia.
Ken
And I'm Ken. Today we're talking about something we all do every night — or at least try to do: sleep.
Mia
And in particular, how sleep affects memory. Ken, be honest. Have you ever pulled an all-nighter before an exam?
Ken
More than once, I'm afraid. In high school, I used to cram the night before every test.
Mia
And did it work?
Ken
I remembered things for the test, but a week later, almost everything was gone.
Mia
That makes sense, and we'll find out why in a moment. But first, our quiz question. Roughly how much of our lives do we spend asleep? Is it a) about a quarter, b) about a third, or c) about a half?
Ken
I'll say a quarter. I don't sleep much!
Mia
We'll find out at the end of the programme. So, scientists believe that sleep isn't just rest for the brain. It's when the brain does some important work.
Ken
What kind of work?
Mia
While we sleep, the brain seems to consolidate memories. To consolidate something means to make it stronger and more stable. So what you learned during the day gets sorted and stored.
Ken
So when I stayed up all night, I skipped that step completely.
Mia
Exactly. And there's another problem. If you don't get enough sleep, you feel drowsy the next day — sleepy and slow — and it's much harder to take in new information.
Ken
That explains a lot about my maths lessons.
Mia
Some studies also suggest that a short nap in the afternoon can boost your ability to learn. To boost means to increase or improve something.
Ken
Great news for nap lovers. But can you catch up on sleep at the weekend? I often sleep until noon on Sundays.
Mia
To catch up on sleep means to sleep more to make up for the sleep you've missed. It can help you feel better, but many experts say a regular sleep schedule is better than sleeping in once a week. catch up on sleep
Ken
So the real lesson is: don't cram, sleep.
Mia
That's it. Now, back to the quiz. I asked how much of our lives we spend asleep. Ken said a quarter, but the answer is b) about a third. If you sleep eight hours a night, that's exactly a third of your day.
Ken
So if I live to ninety, I'll spend about thirty years asleep!
Mia
Thirty very useful years. Let's recap today's words. An all-nighter is a night when you stay up studying or working. To cram is to study a lot in a short time just before an exam.
Ken
Consolidate means to make something stronger and more stable. Drowsy means sleepy. Boost means to increase or improve. And to catch up on sleep is to sleep more to make up for lost sleep. consolidate
Mia
That's all for today. Sleep well, and goodbye!
Ken
Bye! またね!
