Traffic Jams from Nowhere
In a famous experiment in Japan, cars drove around a circular track at the same speed. What happened?
- They stayed perfectly spaced
- A traffic jam appeared with no obstacle
- All the cars stopped at once
A traffic jam appeared with no obstacle — 答えは b。

Mia
Hello and welcome to 6 Minute Talk. I'm Mia.
Ken
And I'm Ken. Sorry I was late today, Mia. I was stuck in traffic for forty minutes.
Mia
Was there an accident?
Ken
That's the strange thing. There was nothing. No accident, no roadworks. The cars just slowed down, and then suddenly the road was clear again.
Mia
That's called a phantom traffic jam, and it's our topic today. But first, our quiz. In a famous experiment in Japan, cars drove around a circular track at the same speed. What happened? a) they stayed perfectly spaced, b) a traffic jam appeared with no obstacle, or c) all the cars stopped at once?
Ken
Given today's topic, I'm guessing b.
Mia
We'll find out. So normally, we think traffic jams are caused by a bottleneck — a narrow place where the road gets smaller, so cars have to slow down.
Ken
Like a tunnel, or where three lanes become two.
Mia
Exactly. But when there are a lot of cars on the road, even a tiny change can cause congestion. Congestion means too many vehicles in one place, so traffic moves very slowly.
Ken
What kind of tiny change?
Mia
One driver brakes a little — maybe they looked at their phone or got too close to the car in front. The driver behind brakes a bit harder, and the next one harder still.
Ken
So the effect gets bigger as it moves back. Like a ripple on water.
Mia
Yes, a ripple — a small wave that spreads out. Scientists call it a stop-and-go wave. It moves backwards through the traffic, even though all the cars are moving forwards.
Ken
And I suppose tailgating makes it worse. To tailgate means to drive too close behind another car.
Mia
Definitely. If you're too close, you have to brake hard. If you keep a safe distance and drive at a steady speed, you can absorb small changes instead of passing them on. Steady means not changing much.
Ken
So during rush hour, the best thing I can do is stay calm and leave space. Rush hour is the time of day when lots of people are travelling to or from work.
Mia
Exactly. Now, the quiz. Ken guessed b, and he was right! In 2008, a team led by researchers at Nagoya University put 22 cars on a circular track. At first they were evenly spaced, but soon a jam appeared — with no bottleneck at all.
Ken
So my forty minutes this morning were probably caused by one person braking. Amazing.
Mia
Possibly! Let's review today's words: bottleneck, congestion, ripple, tailgate, steady and rush hour.
Ken
That's all for today. Drive safely, and goodbye!
