Mottainai: The Problem of Food Waste
Roughly how much of the food produced in the world is lost or wasted, according to a well-known UN estimate?
- About 5%
- About a third
- About 70%
About a third — 答えは b の「約3分の1」。

Ken
Hello and welcome to 6 Minute Talk. I'm Ken.
Mia
And I'm Mia. Ken, what did you have for dinner last night?
Ken
Leftovers — some curry from the night before. Leftovers are food that hasn't been eaten and is kept for later.
Mia
Good for you! Because today we're talking about food waste. In Japanese there's a word for the feeling of regret when something is wasted: mottainai.
Ken
My grandmother said it every time I left a single grain of rice in my bowl. But first, our quiz. Roughly how much of the food produced in the world is lost or wasted, according to a well-known UN estimate? a) about 5%, b) about a third, or c) about 70%?
Mia
Seventy percent sounds too high. I'll go for 5%. 70%は多すぎる気がする。
Ken
We'll find out at the end. So, Mia, why do we throw away so much food?
Mia
One big reason is confusion about dates. Many people throw food away as soon as it passes the best-before date.
Ken
And that's a mistake?
Mia
Often, yes. A best-before date is about quality — the food tastes best before that date. It's not usually about safety. A use-by date is different. That's the one about safety.
Ken
Like in Japan, where we have "shomi kigen" and "shohi kigen".
Mia
Exactly. Of course, some food is perishable — it goes bad quickly, like fish, milk or fresh vegetables. You need to be careful with those.
Ken
Yes, milk goes off very quickly in summer. To go off means to become bad and not safe to eat or drink.
Mia
Another reason is portion size. A portion is the amount of food served to one person. When restaurants serve huge portions, people can't finish them.
Ken
Some restaurants in Japan now let you take leftovers home in a box. I think that's a great idea.
Mia
Me too. And if food really can't be eaten, some people compost it. To compost means to let food and plant waste break down so it can be used to help plants grow.
Ken
My grandmother did that too! She was way ahead of her time. Now, the quiz. I asked how much of the world's food is lost or wasted. Mia said 5%.
Ken
But the answer is b) about a third. That's a famous estimate from the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization. Newer studies use different methods, but the amount is still huge.
Mia
A third! That really is mottainai. OK, let's review today's words: leftovers, best-before date, perishable, go off, portion and compost. leftovers、best-before date、perishable、go off、portion、そして compost。
Ken
