トーク
Ken
Hello, this is 6 Minute Talk, and I'm Ken. こんにちは、「6ミニッツ・トーク」、ケンです。
Mia
And I'm Mia. Ken, I have to ask you something. Yesterday I sent you a long message, and you replied with just a thumbs-up. Were you angry with me? ミアです。ケン、ちょっと聞きたいことがあるの。昨日長いメッセージを送ったら、親指を立てた絵文字だけ返ってきたよね。怒ってた?
Ken
Angry? No! It meant "Great, thanks!" I was just busy. 怒ってる?まさか!「いいね、ありがとう!」って意味だよ。忙しかっただけ。
Mia
Well, some people feel that a thumbs-up on its own can come across as cold. And that's our topic today: emoji and how easily they're misunderstood. でも、親指の絵文字だけだと冷たく感じられるっていう人もいるのよ。それが今日のテーマ。絵文字と、それがいかに誤解されやすいかです。
Ken
Before we start, here's our quiz question. In which country did emoji first become popular on mobile phones? Is it a) the USA, b) Japan, or c) South Korea? 始める前にクイズです。絵文字が最初に携帯電話で広まったのはどの国でしょう? a) アメリカ、b) 日本、c) 韓国。
Mia
I'm going to say the USA, because so much technology comes from there. アメリカにするわ。テクノロジーってあそこから来るものが多いから。
Ken
We'll see. So, why do we use emoji at all? どうかな。さて、そもそもなぜ絵文字を使うんだろう?
Mia
When we talk face to face, our voice and expression help us convey our feelings. To convey means to express or communicate something. In a text message, all of that disappears. 顔を合わせて話すときは、声や表情が気持ちを「convey」する助けになります。convey は伝えるという意味。でもテキストメッセージだと、それが全部消えてしまうんです。
Ken
So emoji add the tone. Your tone is the feeling in the way you say something — friendly, serious, joking. だから絵文字でトーンを足すんだね。tone は言い方にこもった感じ。親しげ、真剣、冗談っぽい、とか。
Mia
Exactly. The problem is that the same emoji can be ambiguous. Ambiguous means it can be understood in more than one way. そのとおり。問題は、同じ絵文字でも「ambiguous」になりうること。ambiguous は、2通り以上の意味にとれるということです。
Ken
Like the skull emoji. I thought it meant danger, but my younger cousin uses it to mean "I'm dying of laughter". ドクロの絵文字とかね。危険って意味だと思ってたけど、年下のいとこは「笑いすぎて死にそう」って意味で使ってる。
Mia
That's a good example of a generation gap — a difference in ideas or habits between older and younger people. Different age groups often read the same emoji differently. それは「generation gap」のいい例ね。年上と年下の人のあいだにある考え方や習慣の違いのこと。年齢層によって同じ絵文字の受け取り方が違うことがよくあるの。
Ken
So it's easy to misinterpret a message. To misinterpret is to understand something wrongly. だからメッセージを「misinterpret」しやすいんだね。misinterpret は、間違って理解するという意味です。
Mia
Right. And culture matters too. A gesture that looks positive in one country might look rude in another, and emoji can carry those meanings with them. そう。文化も関係するの。ある国ではいい意味のしぐさが、別の国では失礼に見えることもあって、絵文字もその意味を引き継ぐことがあるのよ。
Ken
So what's the solution? Stop using emoji? じゃあ解決策は?絵文字を使うのをやめる?
Mia
Not at all. Just add a few words. "Great, thanks!" plus a thumbs-up comes across as much warmer than the thumbs-up alone. To come across as means to seem a certain way to other people. とんでもない。言葉を少し足せばいいの。「いいね、ありがとう!」に親指の絵文字をつければ、絵文字だけよりずっと温かく感じられる。come across as は、ほかの人から〜のように見える、という意味です。
Ken
Lesson learned. Now, the quiz. I asked where emoji first became popular on mobile phones. Mia said the USA, but the answer is b) Japan. They spread on Japanese phones in the late 1990s, and the word comes from Japanese: "e" means picture and "moji" means character. よくわかったよ。さてクイズ。絵文字が最初に携帯電話で広まった国はどこか。ミアはアメリカと答えたけど、正解は b) 日本。1990年代後半に日本の携帯で広まって、言葉も日本語から来てるんだ。「絵」は picture、「文字」は character。
Mia
So it has nothing to do with the English word "emotion"? I always thought it did! じゃあ英語の emotion とは関係ないの?ずっとそうだと思ってた!
Ken
Nothing at all. It's just a coincidence. OK, let's review today's words: convey, tone, ambiguous, generation gap, misinterpret, and come across as. まったく関係ないよ。ただの偶然。じゃあ今日の単語のおさらい。convey、tone、ambiguous、generation gap、misinterpret、そして come across as。
Mia
That's all from us. Goodbye — and choose your emoji carefully! 今日はここまで。さようなら。絵文字は慎重に選んでね!
