トーク

Ken
Hello and welcome to 6 Minute Talk. I'm Ken. こんにちは、「6ミニッツ・トーク」へようこそ。ケンです。
Mia
And I'm Mia. Ken, I've noticed that when you call your mother, you sound completely different. ミアです。ケン、お母さんと電話してるとき、まるで別人みたいな話し方になるよね。
Ken
That's because I switch to Osaka dialect! A dialect is a form of a language spoken in a particular area, with its own words and grammar. 大阪弁に切り替えてるからね!dialect は、ある地域で話される言語の形で、独自の単語や文法があるもののこと。
Mia
And that's our topic today: dialects and accents. But first, the quiz. Roughly how many languages are spoken in the world today? a) about 700, b) about 7,000, or c) about 70,000? それが今日のテーマ。方言となまりです。でもまずクイズ。今、世界ではおよそいくつの言語が話されているでしょう? a) 約700、b) 約7,000、c) 約7万。
Ken
Hmm, I'll say 700. うーん、700かな。
Mia
We'll see. So, what's the difference between a dialect and an accent? どうかしら。さて、方言(dialect)となまり(accent)はどう違うんでしょう?
Ken
An accent is just about pronunciation — the way you say words. A dialect includes pronunciation, but also different words and grammar. accent は発音だけの話。言葉の言い方のことだね。dialect は発音も含むけど、単語や文法も違うんだ。
Mia
So in Osaka, you say "ookini" instead of "arigato". That's a dialect word. じゃあ大阪で「ありがとう」の代わりに「おおきに」って言うのは、方言の単語ね。
Ken
Right, although these days you mostly hear it from older people or in shops. English has lots of regional differences too, doesn't it? Regional means connected with a particular area. そう、最近はお年寄りやお店で聞くことが多いけどね。英語にも地域差がたくさんあるよね?regional は、特定の地域に関係するという意味です。
Mia
Definitely. In Britain, you can sometimes guess where someone grew up from just a few words. Liverpool, Newcastle and London all sound very different. もちろん。イギリスでは、少し話を聞くだけでその人がどこで育ったかわかることがあるの。リバプール、ニューカッスル、ロンドンは全然違って聞こえるわ。
Ken
Then what is "standard" English or Japanese? じゃあ「標準」の英語や日本語って何なの?
Mia
A standard form is the version that's used in schools, news and official documents. But it isn't more "correct" than a dialect. It's just the one that was chosen for those purposes. standard は、学校やニュース、公式の書類で使われる形のことです。でも方言より「正しい」わけじゃないの。そういう目的のために選ばれた形というだけ。
Ken
I like that. For me, my dialect is part of my identity — the things that make me who I am. その考え、好きだな。ぼくにとって方言は「identity」の一部なんだ。自分を自分らしくしているもの。
Mia
Many people feel the same way. Sometimes, though, dialects can be so different that people can't understand each other. Linguists ask whether two varieties are mutually intelligible — whether speakers can understand each other without studying. 同じように感じる人は多いわね。でも、方言の違いが大きすぎて、お互いに理解できないこともあります。言語学者は、2つの言葉が「mutually intelligible」かどうかを考えます。勉強しなくても、お互いに理解し合えるかどうかということ。
Ken
My friend from Aomori sometimes speaks Tsugaru dialect, and honestly, I can't follow it at all. 青森出身の友だちがときどき津軽弁を話すんだけど、正直、まったくついていけないよ。
Mia
That's a great example! Now, back to our quiz. I asked how many languages are spoken in the world today. Ken said 700, but the answer is b) about 7,000. And a large share of them are endangered, because fewer and fewer people speak them. いい例ね!さてクイズに戻ります。今世界でいくつの言語が話されているか。ケンは700と答えましたが、正解は b) 約7,000。そしてその多くが、話す人がどんどん減って消滅の危機にあるんです。
Ken
Seven thousand! And each one has its own dialects too. 7,000!しかもそれぞれに方言があるんだね。
Mia
Exactly. Let's review today's words: dialect, accent, regional, standard, identity and mutually intelligible. そのとおり。今日の単語のおさらい。dialect、accent、regional、standard、identity、そして mutually intelligible。
Ken
That's all from us. Ookini, and goodbye! 今日はここまで。おおきに、さようなら!
