Ken
Hello, this is 6 Minute Talk, and I'm Ken.
Mia
And I'm Mia. Ken, are you a cat person or a dog person?
Ken
Definitely a cat person. My cat, Mochi, is sitting on my desk right now, which makes working from home quite difficult.
Mia
Then you'll enjoy today's topic: cats, and why so many of us love them. But first, the quiz. Where was the oldest known evidence of humans living closely with cats found? a) Egypt, b) Cyprus, or c) Japan?
Ken
Egypt, surely. The ancient Egyptians loved cats.
Mia
We'll find out later. So, how did cats come to live with people? Unlike dogs, they weren't really trained for jobs.
Ken
Many scientists think cats more or less domesticated themselves. To domesticate an animal means to make it able to live with people.
Mia
How did that happen?
Ken
When people started farming and storing grain, mice came to eat it. And wildcats came to eat the mice. Farmers were happy to have them around.
Mia
A perfect partnership. And maybe that's why cats are still so independent. Independent means they don't need other people or animals very much.
Ken
Some people say cats are aloof — unfriendly and not interested in others.
Mia
But anyone who lives with a cat knows they can be very affectionate. Affectionate means showing love — like rubbing against your legs or sleeping next to you.
Ken
Mochi only becomes affectionate at dinner time. But when he purrs, I forgive him for everything.
Mia
To purr means to make that soft, low sound in the throat. Interestingly, cats usually purr when they're happy, but some also purr when they're stressed or in pain. purr
Ken
I didn't know that. And of course, cats are famous for sleeping a lot.
Mia
Yes — that's where the word catnap comes from. A catnap is a short, light sleep, usually during the day.
Ken
I could use a catnap right now. Anyway, the quiz?
Mia
Ken said Egypt, but the answer is b) Cyprus. In a grave about 9,500 years old, archaeologists found a cat buried together with a human. There were no wild cats on the island, so people must have brought them by boat.
Ken
So people have loved cats for thousands of years before the Egyptians. Mochi will be very proud.
Mia
Let's recap today's words: domesticate, independent, aloof, affectionate, purr and catnap.
