トーク

Mia
Hello, this is 6 Minute Talk. I'm Mia. こんにちは、「6ミニッツ・トーク」、ミアです。
Ken
And I'm Ken. Mia, I asked an AI chatbot to help me plan this programme. ケンです。ミア、この番組の構成をAIチャットボットに手伝ってもらったんだ。
Mia
Should I be worried about my job, then? じゃあ、わたしの仕事は危ないってこと?
Ken
Ha! Well, that's today's topic: will artificial intelligence take our jobs? But first, our quiz question. Where does the word "robot" come from? a) a Czech play, b) a Japanese comic, or c) an American film? はは!それが今日のテーマなんだ。人工知能は仕事を奪うのか?でもまずクイズです。「ロボット」という言葉はどこから来たでしょう? a) チェコの戯曲、b) 日本の漫画、c) アメリカの映画。
Mia
Japan loves robots, so I'll say a Japanese comic. 日本はロボットが大好きだから、日本の漫画にする。
Ken
We'll find out later. So, people have worried about machines taking jobs for a long time, haven't they? 答えはあとで。さて、機械に仕事を奪われるという心配は、ずっと昔からあったよね?
Mia
For centuries. Factories, computers, the internet — each time, some jobs disappeared and new ones appeared. What's different now is that AI can automate tasks that we thought only humans could do, like writing or translating. 何百年も前からね。工場、コンピューター、インターネット。そのたびに消える仕事もあれば、新しく生まれる仕事もあった。今が違うのは、文章を書いたり翻訳したり、人間にしかできないと思っていた作業をAIが「automate」できることなの。
Ken
To automate means to make a machine or computer do a job instead of a person. automate は、人の代わりに機械やコンピューターに仕事をさせるという意味です。
Mia
Right. And the jobs most at risk are usually the ones with lots of repetitive tasks. Repetitive means doing the same thing again and again. そう。そして最も影響を受けやすいのは、たいてい「repetitive」な作業が多い仕事です。repetitive は、同じことを何度もくり返すという意味。
Ken
Like entering data into a spreadsheet all day. 一日中表計算ソフトにデータを入力する、みたいな。
Mia
Exactly. But many experts say AI is more likely to change jobs than to completely replace people. To replace someone is to take their place. そのとおり。でも多くの専門家は、AIは人を完全に「replace」するより、仕事の中身を変える可能性のほうが高いと言っています。replace は、誰かに取って代わるという意味です。
Ken
So a translator might use AI for a first draft, and then check and improve it. たとえば翻訳者なら、AIで下訳を作って、それを確認して直す、とか。
Mia
That's already happening. Which means workers need to adapt — to change in order to deal with a new situation. それはもう起きているわね。つまり働く人は「adapt」する必要がある。新しい状況に対応するために変わるということ。
Ken
And some companies help their staff reskill. To reskill means to learn new skills so you can do a different job. 社員の「reskill」を手助けしている会社もあるね。reskill は、別の仕事ができるように新しいスキルを身につけること。
Mia
Yes. And some human qualities are pretty much irreplaceable — they can't be replaced. Things like kindness, building trust, or understanding how someone really feels. ええ。それに、人間の性質の中にはほぼ「irreplaceable」なもの、つまり代わりがきかないものもあります。やさしさや信頼関係を築く力、相手が本当はどう感じているかを理解する力などです。
Ken
So a good nurse or teacher is safe? じゃあ、いい看護師や先生は大丈夫?
Mia
Their jobs will probably change too, but the human part is hard to automate. Now, the quiz. Ken? その仕事もたぶん変わっていくけど、人間らしい部分は自動化しにくいわね。さて、クイズ。ケン?
Ken
I asked where the word "robot" comes from. Mia said a Japanese comic, but the answer is a) a Czech play. The word became famous through a 1920 play by Karel Čapek. It comes from the Czech word "robota", which means forced labour or hard work. 「ロボット」という言葉の由来を聞いたね。ミアは日本の漫画と答えたけど、正解は a) チェコの戯曲。この言葉は、カレル・チャペックが1920年に書いた戯曲で有名になったんだ。チェコ語の robota(強制労働、つらい仕事)から来ています。
Mia
So robots were about work from the very beginning! Let's recap today's words: automate, repetitive, replace, adapt, reskill and irreplaceable. じゃあロボットって最初から仕事と結びついていたのね!今日の単語のおさらい。automate、repetitive、replace、adapt、reskill、そして irreplaceable。
Ken
