- not+all/every/always=部分否定(すべてが〜とは限らない)

- anything but=決して〜ない/nothing but=〜だけ
|---|---|
| not all / not every | none / no / not any |
| not always | never |
| not both | neither / not either |
| not necessarily | ― |
| not altogether / not entirely / not quite | not at all / not in the least |
| not everyone | no one / nobody |
- 1not+全部系=部分否定not all・not always のように、not が all・every・both・always・necessarily・completely などを否定すると「すべてが〜とは限らない」。Not all students like math. The rich are not always happy.
All that glitters is not gold.(光るもの必ずしも金ならず)のように部分否定で読むのが普通。
I don't know both of them.2人とも知っているわけではない。I know neither of them.2人のどちらも知らない。
- 4全体否定の強調not 〜 at all・not 〜 in the least・by no means・not 〜 in any way で「まったく〜ない」。I'm not in the least tired.
hard(熱心に)と混同しない。I could hardly hear him.
He seldom eats breakfast.
a few・a little は「少しある」。 There is little hope.
✕I can't hardly believe it. → I can hardly believe it.
He seldom comes here, does he?
Little did I dream that I would win.
I never see this photo without thinking of my grandmother.
- 2not+un- / not+否定的な語not unusual・not uncommon(珍しくない)は控えめな肯定。It is not uncommon for students to work part-time.
- 3No 〜 without …「… There is no rule without exceptions.
|---|---|---|
| the last 名詞 to V | 最も〜しそうにない | He is the last person to tell a lie. |
| far from 〜 | 決して〜ではない | The result was far from perfect. |
| anything but 〜 | 決して〜ではない(※+名詞で「〜以外なら何でも」も) | The test was anything but easy. |
| free from [of] 〜 | 〜がない | a life free from worry |
| beyond 〜 | 〜できない(範囲を超えて) | The view was beautiful beyond description. |
| above -ing | 〜するような人ではない | She is above telling lies. |
| fail to V | 〜しない・できない | He failed to come.(never fail to V=必ず〜する) |
| remain to be p.p. | まだ〜されていない | The problem remains to be solved. |
| have [be] yet to V | まだ〜していない | I have yet to meet him. |
| know better than to V | 〜するほどばかではない | She knows better than to trust him. |
| more than S can V | 〜できない | That is more than I can bear. |
- anything but決して〜ではないvsnothing but〜だけ(=only)nothing but=only と言い換えて判断
- few / littleほとんどないvsa few / a little少しあるa があれば「ある」側

- ✕He seldom goes out, doesn't he?○He seldom goes out, does he?

- ✕She is the last person telling lies.○She is the last person to tell lies.the last 名詞 to V の形
- ✕I have not yet to finish it.○I have yet to finish it.have yet to 自体が否定
