  1. as 原級 as／比較級 than／the 最上級 in・of。形をまぜない
  2. 比較級の強調は much・far・even・still・a lot（very は不可）
  3. A is no more B than C is D＝AがBでないのはCがDでないのと同じ

原級・比較級・最上級の基本8

  1. 1as 原級 as
    「同じくらい〜」。否定の not as [so] 〜 as は「〜ほど…ない」。
    This book is not as interesting as that one.この本はあの本ほどおもしろくない。
  2. 2比べる物をそろえる
    比べるのは「物と物」。名詞のくり返しを避けて that of（単数）・those of（複数）を使う。
    The population of Tokyo is larger than that of Osaka.東京の人口は大阪の人口より多い。
    ✕…larger than Osaka.（人口と都市を比べている）
  3. 3最上級の範囲は in と of
    in＋場所・集団（in the class / in Japan）、of＋複数・期間（of the three / of all / of the year）。
    Ken is the tallest of the three.ケンは3人の中でいちばん背が高い。
  4. 4同じ物の中の比較は the なし
    同じ人・物の状態どうしを比べる最上級は the をつけない。
    This lake is deepest here.この湖はここがいちばん深い。
  5. 52者なら the＋比較級＋of the two
    2つのうち「より〜な方」は the＋比較級。
    Ken is the taller of the two.ケンは2人のうち背が高い方だ。
  6. 6than ではなく to をとる語
    superior・inferior・senior・junior・prefer A to B は than ではなく to。
    This model is superior to that one.このモデルはあれより優れている。
    ✕superior than
  7. 7比較級 and 比較級
    「ますます〜」。more を使う語は more and more 〜。
    It's getting colder and colder.ますます寒くなっている。
  8. 8than I / than me
    than の後は than I (am) が文法的に正式、than me は口語で普通。※正誤問題では than I が無難。

「差」を図で：強調・数字・倍数

① 差の大きさ＝強調語 比べる相手 a little taller much / far taller 差 小 差 大 ✕ very taller （very は原級用） ② 差を数字で言う 3歳 I he three years older than I ＝ older than I by three years ③ 倍数（何倍か） ×1 ×3 that one this room three times as large as 2倍 twice ／ 半分 half
比較級を強めるのは差を大きくする much・far。差の数字は比較級の前か by

倍数・差・強調4

  1. 1倍数表現
    X times as 〜 as（2倍は twice、半分は half）。名詞型 X times the size of 〜 もある。※X times larger than も使われる。
    This room is three times as large as that one.この部屋はあの部屋の3倍の広さだ。
  2. 2比較級の強調
    much・far・even・still・a lot・a little は比較級を強める。very は比較級を直接強めない（※最上級は the very best の形で可）。
    This is much better than that.こちらの方がずっといい。
  3. 3最上級の強調
    by far the 最上級／the very 最上級／much the 最上級。
    She is by far the best player on the team.彼女はチームで断トツにうまい。
  4. 4差は by か比較級の直前
    「〜だけ…」の差は比較級の前に数字を置くか、by 〜 で表す。
    He is three years older than I.彼は私より3歳年上だ。
    He is older than I by three years.（同じ意味）

the 比較級, the 比較級3

  1. 1〜すればするほど…
    The 比較級 S V, the 比較級 S V。形容詞＋名詞はセットで前に出す。後半を省くこともある（The sooner, the better.）。
    The more books you read, the more you learn.本を読めば読むほど、多くを学ぶ。
    ✕The more you have money, 〜 → The more money you have, 〜
  2. 2all the 比較級 for / because
    「〜なのでそれだけいっそう…」。
    I like him all the better for his faults.欠点があるからこそ、なおさら彼が好きだ。
  3. 3none the 比較級 for
    「〜だからといって少しも…ない」。
    He is none the happier for his wealth.彼は金持ちだからといって少しも幸せではない。

比較の慣用表現（no と not で大違い）

no は「差ゼロ」＋話し手の気持ち（少ない！多い！）。not は単なる否定で上限・下限を表す。

クジラ構文4

  1. 1A is no more B than C is D
    「AがBでないのは、CがDでないのと同じ」。than の後ろには「当然成り立たない」とわかる例が来る。
    A whale is no more a fish than a horse is.クジラが魚でないのは、馬が魚でないのと同じだ。
  2. 2＝ not 〜 any more than
    A is not B any more than C is D とも書く。意味は同じ。
  3. 3than 以下は肯定形でも否定の意味
    than a horse is（肯定形）を「馬が魚であるのと同じ」と訳すのは誤り。両方とも否定で訳す。
  4. 4A is no less B than C is D
    「AがBなのは、CがDなのと同じ」（両方とも本当）。no less 〜 than ＝「〜に劣らず」。
    She is no less talented than her sister (is).彼女は姉に劣らず才能がある。

最上級と同じ意味の表現

書き換え問題の定番。この型の any other・no other の後の名詞は単数。
