目安 4分The Problem of Returns
Online shopping has grown rapidly over the past twenty years. One reason for its popularity is that many online stores allow customers to return items for free. Since shoppers cannot touch or try on products before buying them, free returns make them feel more comfortable ordering. Some customers even buy the same item in several sizes, planning to keep only the one that fits and send the others back.
However, returns have become a serious problem for companies. In the United States, customers return about twenty to thirty percent of the clothes they buy online, compared with less than ten percent of those bought in stores. Each returned item must be transported, checked, and repackaged, which costs a great deal of money. In fact, for cheap items, it is sometimes less expensive for companies to throw the products away than to sell them again.
This situation also harms the environment. Returned goods are carried by trucks and planes, which produce carbon dioxide, and millions of returned products end up in landfills every year. To deal with this, some companies have begun charging customers a fee for returns. Others are using technology such as virtual fitting rooms that help shoppers choose the right size. Experts believe that shoppers also need to think more carefully before ordering.
