目安 4分Music and the Brain
People in every culture around the world make music, and scientists have long wondered why music has such a strong effect on our feelings. In the past, it was difficult to study what happens inside the brain when people listen to songs. However, since the 1990s, new brain-scanning technology has allowed researchers to observe brain activity while people are listening to or playing music.
These studies have produced some interesting results. When people hear music they enjoy, their brains release dopamine, a chemical that is also connected with the pleasure people get from food and other rewards. Other research has shown that learning to play a musical instrument can improve children's memory and their ability to pay attention. Some studies even suggest that musicians' brains are better at recognizing sounds in noisy places, such as understanding speech in a crowded restaurant.
Music is now being used to help patients in hospitals. For example, people who have had strokes sometimes lose the ability to speak, but some of them can still sing words. Therapists use singing to help these patients recover their speech. Music is also used to reduce pain and anxiety before operations. However, scientists say that more research is needed, because the effects of music can be very different from person to person.
