Young People Living Alone

In Japan, the number of people living alone has been rising for several decades. According to government data, single-person households now make up almost forty percent of all households, more than any other type. While many of these people are elderly, a large number are young adults in their twenties and thirties who have moved to big cities for university or work.

Living alone has several advantages. Young people can make their own decisions about how to spend their time and money, and they learn to be independent by doing household chores and managing a budget. To meet the needs of these people, companies have developed new products and services, such as small-sized meals at convenience stores, compact apartments, and restaurants with counter seats designed for people eating alone.

On the other hand, living alone can also cause problems. Rents in large cities are high, so many young people have little money left to save after paying for housing. Some also feel lonely, especially when they are sick or have just moved to a new city. To address this, "share houses," in which residents have their own rooms but share a kitchen and a living room, have become popular. Residents say they enjoy meeting new people while still having privacy.

(6)Which of the following is true about single-person households in Japan?
(7)How have companies responded to the needs of people living alone?
(8)What is a "share house"?
