Ueno Park in northeast Tokyo was designated in 1873 as one of Japan's first public parks. The land had been the grounds of a great temple that guarded the shogun's castle from the unlucky northeast. Today it holds the Tokyo National Museum, a science museum, art museums, a zoo, a pond full of lotus, and about eight hundred cherry trees.

Ueno Park is where modern Japan put its institutions. In 1873, five years after the Meiji government took over, it was designated as one of the country's first public parks, borrowing a Western idea that had no Japanese equivalent.
Before that the hill was the grounds of Kaneiji, a temple built to guard Edo Castle from the northeast, the direction traditionally considered unlucky. Much of it burned in the fighting of 1868. What went up on the cleared ground says a lot: the national museum, founded in 1872 and the oldest in the country, a zoo in 1882, art museums, a concert hall, a science museum.
So on one afternoon you can see Buddhist sculpture, a blue whale model, and a pond covered in lotus leaves. In early April the cherry trees along the central avenue draw enormous crowds, and blue plastic sheets cover the ground from morning.
上野公園は、近代の日本が国の施設を置いた場所です。明治の新政府ができて5年後の1873年、日本で最初の公園の一つに定められました。西洋の考え方を借りたもので、それまで日本に同じものはありませんでした。
それ以前、この丘は寛永寺の境内でした。江戸城を鬼門、つまり縁起の悪いとされる北東の方角から守るために建てられた寺です。その多くは1868年の戦いで焼けました。空いた土地に何が建ったかが、よく物語っています。

明治6年（1873年）の太政官布達により、上野は芝・浅草・深川・飛鳥山とともに日本で最初の公園の一つとされた。それ以前は東叡山寛永寺の境内で、三代将軍家光が江戸城の鬼門を守るために建てた寺だった。慶応4年（1868年）の上野戦争で伽藍の多くを失っている。東京国立博物館は明治5年（1872年）の創設で日本最古の博物館、上野動物園は明治15年（1882年）の開園で日本最初の動物園とされる。高村光雲作の西郷隆盛像は明治31年（1898年）に除幕された。
