The standard explanation
Tsumami zaiku is a traditional craft said to date back to the Edo period. Craftspeople cut thin silk into small squares, fold each one into a petal with tweezers, and glue the petals onto a base to form flowers. It's best known for the hair ornaments that girls wear for Shichi-Go-San and that young women wear with a furisode at the Coming of Age Day ceremony.

As a short speech
A full paragraph you can read aloud
If you've seen a little girl dressed in a kimono for Shichi-Go-San, you may have noticed the colorful flowers in her hair. Many of them are made with a technique called tsumami zaiku. Tsumami means "to pinch," and the craft is all about pinching and folding.
A craftsperson cuts thin silk into small squares, folds each square into a petal using tweezers, and then arranges dozens of petals on a base to build a flower. There are two basic shapes: a round petal and a pointed one. By combining them, makers create plum blossoms, chrysanthemums, and even cranes.
The technique is said to date back to the Edo period, and Edo tsumami kanzashi, or hair ornaments, are a designated traditional craft of Tokyo. Apprentice geisha in Kyoto, called maiko, wear flower hairpins that change with the month. Today, many people also try it as a hobby and make hair clips or brooches. I find it amazing that something so small takes so much patience.
Questions people actually ask
And how to answer them.
Why do they use tweezers instead of fingers?
The squares are very small, and the folds need to be sharp. Tweezers let the maker hold each tiny piece firmly and place it exactly where it should go.
Is it only used for hair ornaments?
Hair ornaments are the classic use, but today you'll also see tsumami zaiku brooches, earrings, and decorations. Kits for beginners are sold, and it's a popular hobby.
Do maiko really change their hairpins every month?
Yes. Maiko in Kyoto usually wear hairpins that match the month, such as plum blossoms in early spring and maple leaves in autumn. Many of them are made with tsumami zaiku.
