People still say they want to go to Tsukiji, and then hear that Tsukiji closed, and get confused. Here is the situation. The wholesale market, where fish arrive by the ton and are auctioned before dawn, moved in October 2018 to a purpose-built facility at Toyosu, about two kilometers away, after eighty-three years at Tsukiji.
The tuna auction is there, and you watch it through glass or from a viewing deck. But the outer market at Tsukiji never moved. Those narrow streets of small shops, the sushi counters, the knife shops, the man grilling scallops, are all still operating.
So if you want to see a working auction at five in the morning, go to Toyosu. If you want to eat standing up in a crowded alley, go to Tsukiji. Most visitors actually want the second one.

Yes, at Toyosu. There is a window along an upper walkway open to anyone, and a lower deck much closer to the floor that requires applying in advance because places are limited.
豊洲で見られます。上の通路には誰でも入れる窓があり、床に近い下の見学デッキは人数が限られるので事前の申し込みが要ります。
QWhy did the market move at all?
The Tsukiji buildings were from the 1930s, open to the weather and too small for modern refrigerated handling. The move was argued about for decades, partly over contamination at the Toyosu site, which delayed it by two years.
築地の建物は1930年代のもので、外気にさらされ、いまの冷蔵の扱いには手狭でした。移転は何十年も議論され、豊洲の土壌汚染をめぐって2年遅れました。
QIs the sushi there actually better?
It is very fresh, and some shops are excellent. But you are paying market prices at a tourist destination, and a good neighborhood sushi place elsewhere in Tokyo can be just as good for less.
