The shortest answer that works

Makiwara is a straw training target used for punching in karate and for close-range shooting in kyudo.

The standard explanation

Makiwara means "rolled straw." In karate, it's a post with straw or padding at the top that you punch over and over to build a strong fist and good form. In kyudo, Japanese archery, it's a tightly packed bale of straw that you shoot at from just a few steps away. It lets archers focus on form instead of hitting a distant target.

As a short speech

A full paragraph you can read aloud

Makiwara is a training tool you'll find in two very different martial arts. The word means "rolled straw." In karate, especially in styles from Okinawa, a makiwara is a wooden post fixed in the ground, with straw rope or padding wrapped around the top. Students punch it again and again to toughen their fists and check that their body is lined up correctly when they strike.

It's not about hitting as hard as possible. Good teachers stress control and proper form, and beginners are told to start gently. In kyudo, Japanese archery, the makiwara is a thick, tightly packed bale of straw set on a stand. Archers shoot at it from only a few steps away, so they can't miss, and that's the point.

Without worrying about the target, they can focus on their posture, their draw and the moment of release. Beginners often practice on the makiwara for a long time before shooting at a real target. I like that both arts use something so simple to teach patience and correct form.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

Q

Doesn't punching a makiwara hurt your hands?

It can if you overdo it or use bad form. That's why teachers tell beginners to start lightly and build up slowly. Many dojos have their own rules about how and when to use it.

Q

Why would an archer shoot at something they can't miss?

Because the goal is to fix your form first. When the target is right in front of you, you stop worrying about hitting it and pay attention to your body. Good form is what makes you hit the real target later.
