Kanazawa was the seat of the Maeda family, the wealthiest domain in Japan after the shogun's own holdings, and that wealth paid for crafts: gold leaf, lacquer, dyed silk, ceramics. The city was not bombed in the war, so three old districts — samurai houses, two teahouse quarters — survive in place. Kenrokuen, one of Japan's three famous gardens, is here, and around ninety-nine percent of the country's gold leaf is still beaten in the city.

Kanazawa is the city to send someone who wants Kyoto without the crowds, and the reasons it looks the way it does are specific. It was the castle town of the Maeda family, whose domain was rated at a million koku of rice, the largest domain in Japan outside the shogun's own lands.
A domain that wealthy, and deliberately not threatening militarily, put its money into crafts and scholarship instead, which is why the city still makes gold leaf, lacquerware, dyed silk and pottery at a high level. Around ninety-nine percent of Japan's gold leaf is produced here, and you will be offered ice cream with a sheet of it on top, which is exactly as silly as it sounds and worth doing once.
The second reason is that Kanazawa was not bombed during the war. Three historic districts survive: the samurai quarter with its earthen walls, and two teahouse districts of wooden-fronted buildings. Kenrokuen, counted as one of the three great gardens of Japan, sits beside the castle grounds, and the contemporary art museum next to it is one of the best in the country.
