The standard explanation

Jujutsu is a general name for the old Japanese arts of throwing, pinning and joint locks, taught by many separate schools. Kano Jigoro studied two of these schools as a young man and built judo from them in 1882. Later, a judo expert who settled in Brazil passed his skills on to the Gracie family, which is how Brazilian jiu-jitsu began. The spelling jiu-jitsu is just an older way of writing the same word.

柔術は、投げ技・抑え技・関節技を使う日本の古い武術の総称で、たくさんの流派に分かれて教えられてきました。嘉納治五郎は若いころそのうち二つの流派を学び、1882年、そこから柔道を作りました。のちに、ブラジルに渡った柔道家がグレイシー家に技を伝え、これがブラジリアン柔術の始まりになりました。jiu-jitsu という綴りは、同じ言葉の古い書き方です。

A full paragraph you can read aloud

Jujutsu is the name for a family of old Japanese martial arts that use throws, pins and joint locks instead of weapons. The word ju means soft or flexible, and the idea is to use your opponent's force rather than fight it head-on. Before the modern era, many different schools, or ryu, taught their own versions.

In the early Meiji period, a young man named Kano Jigoro studied two of these schools, Tenjin Shin'yo-ryu and Kito-ryu. In 1882, he opened the Kodokan in Tokyo and taught a safer, more organized system that he called judo. Kano's students later traveled abroad, and one of them, Maeda Mitsuyo, settled in Brazil.

He is said to have taught Carlos Gracie, and the Gracie family developed what is now called Brazilian jiu-jitsu. So when people overseas say jiu-jitsu, they usually mean the Brazilian style. I find it interesting that an art from old Japan came back to Japan in a new form.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

Q

What's the difference between jujutsu and judo?

Jujutsu is the older, broader name for many schools of grappling. Judo is one system that Kano Jigoro created from jujutsu in 1882, removing the most dangerous techniques so people could practice at full strength.

柔術は、たくさんの組み技の流派をまとめた、古くて広い呼び名です。柔道は、嘉納治五郎が1882年に柔術から作った一つの体系で、もっとも危険な技を外し、全力で練習できるようにしたものです。

Q

Is Brazilian jiu-jitsu from Japan?

Its roots are. A Japanese judo expert, Maeda Mitsuyo, is said to have taught the Gracie family in Brazil. They then developed it into their own style, with a strong focus on fighting on the ground.

根っこは日本です。日本の柔道家、前田光世がブラジルでグレイシー家に教えたとされています。グレイシー家はそれを、寝技を重んじる独自のスタイルに作り上げました。

Q

Is Jujutsu Kaisen about martial arts?

No. In that title, jujutsu is written with different kanji and means sorcery or curses. It's spelled the same in English, but it has nothing to do with grappling, and in Japanese the ju in the martial art is a longer sound.

いいえ。あの題名の「じゅじゅつ」は「呪術」という別の漢字で、まじないや呪いの意味です。ローマ字にすると同じ綴りになりますが、組み技とは関係ありません。日本語では、武術の柔術のほうは「じゅう」と伸ばして読みます。
