The standard explanation

Bunbogu means stationery, such as pens, pencils, notebooks and erasers. Japanese stationery is known for small, practical ideas, like pens with ink that can be rubbed out, mechanical pencils that turn the lead to keep the tip sharp, and notebooks with dots on the lines. Big stationery stores, bookstores and even 100-yen shops sell them, and many travelers take them home as gifts.

As a short speech

A full paragraph you can read aloud

Bunbogu is the Japanese word for stationery, and for many visitors, it's one of the most surprising things to shop for in Japan. Walk into a big stationery store in a city, and you may find whole floors of pens, notebooks and sticky notes. What makes Japanese stationery special is not luxury but small, practical ideas.

There are pens with ink that disappears when you rub it, mechanical pencils that turn the lead a little each time you write so the tip stays sharp, and notebooks with tiny dots on the lines to help you draw straight tables. Part of the reason is school life. Japanese students take a lot of handwritten notes, and many carry a full pencil case to class every day.

Some elementary schools ask children to use regular pencils instead of mechanical pencils, though the rules differ from school to school. Stationery makers compete hard for these young customers. For me, a good Japanese pen is the perfect souvenir: cheap, light and useful every day.
