目安 4分Learning Languages Online
In the past, people who wanted to learn a foreign language usually had to attend classes at a language school or travel to another country. Both options cost a lot of money and required a great deal of time. Today, however, the Internet offers many cheaper options. For example, some websites connect learners with teachers in other countries for private lessons through video calls, often at a fraction of the price of traditional lessons.
Other services allow two people who want to learn each other's language to practice together for free. For instance, a Japanese student learning English might talk with an American student learning Japanese, spending half of the time speaking in each language. Research suggests that such conversation practice can greatly improve speaking skills and confidence. Learners also say that they enjoy making friends from other cultures, which motivates them to continue studying.
However, experts point out that online conversation alone is not enough. Learners still need to study grammar and vocabulary on their own. Without these basic skills, they may find it difficult to express complex ideas even after many conversations. In addition, some learners stop using free services after a few weeks because no one checks their progress. Experts therefore recommend setting clear goals and combining online practice with regular self-study.
