AI in the Kitchen

Artificial intelligence is starting to change the way people cook at home. Some new refrigerators have cameras inside that record which foods are stored and when they were bought. By using this information, a smartphone app can warn users before food goes bad. It can also suggest recipes that use the ingredients that are already in the refrigerator, so users do not have to buy anything extra.

Supporters say that this technology could help reduce food waste, which is a serious problem in many developed countries. In Japan, for example, millions of tons of food that could still be eaten are thrown away every year, and a large part of this comes from ordinary households. Some companies have also developed AI programs that plan a whole week of meals based on a family's health goals and budget. Users say these programs save them time when shopping.

On the other hand, not everyone welcomes AI in the kitchen. Some people are worried about privacy because companies may collect data about what families eat and use it for advertising. In addition, smart refrigerators are much more expensive than ordinary ones. Others simply feel that cooking should be a creative activity rather than something controlled by machines. For now, experts believe that AI will be most useful as a helpful assistant, not as a replacement for the cook.

(6)What can some new refrigerators do?
正解は④。第1段落に cameras inside that record which foods are stored and when they were bought とある。bought を purchased と言い換えている。①はアプリは傷む前に警告するだけで、注文するとは書かれていない。②は冷蔵庫が料理をするという記述はない。③はカメラは庫内の食品を記録するもので、利用者を撮影するのではない。
(7)According to the second paragraph, what is one benefit of AI meal-planning programs?
正解は④。第2段落の最後に Users say these programs save them time when shopping とある。①は子どもに料理を教えるという記述はない。②は飲食店についての記述はない。食品ロスの多くは家庭から出ると述べている。③は食品の値段が下がるという記述はない。
(8)Which of the following statements is true?
正解は②。第3段落に companies may collect data about what families eat and use it for advertising とあり、食習慣の情報が企業に使われることを心配する人がいるとわかる。①は専門家は AI を not as a replacement for the cook と考えており、本文と逆。③は本文に記述がない。④はmuch more expensive than ordinary ones とあり、本文と矛盾する。
