Convenience Stores and Local Communities

Japan has more than 55,000 convenience stores, and many people visit them every day. The first stores opened in the 1970s and were designed mainly for busy workers and students in cities who wanted to buy food and drinks quickly. Over the years, however, their services have greatly expanded. Today, customers can pay bills, send packages, print documents, and even get copies of official certificates at many stores.

Convenience stores now also play an important role in the countryside. In some small towns where supermarkets have closed, a convenience store is the only place where residents can buy food and daily goods. Some stores work together with local governments to support elderly people. For example, staff members check on elderly customers who live alone and contact officials if someone has not come to the store for several days.

However, the industry faces serious challenges. Many stores are open 24 hours a day, but it has become difficult to find enough workers, especially at night. Some store owners have complained that they are too exhausted to continue their business. As a result, some chains have started allowing stores to close late at night, and others are testing self-checkout machines and stores with no staff at all. The industry must find a way to keep providing services while protecting its workers.

(6)Who were convenience stores originally designed for?

(7)How do some convenience stores help elderly people?
正解は②。第2段落に contact officials if someone has not come to the store for several days とある。①は高齢者を夜間に雇うという記述はない。③は無料で提供するという記述はない。④は本文に記述がない。
(8)What is one problem that convenience stores face?
正解は④。第3段落に it has become difficult to find enough workers, especially at night とある。
