Talking to a Doctor Online

Traditionally, people who felt sick had to go to a hospital or clinic to see a doctor. This could be difficult for elderly people, people living on remote islands, and busy workers. Online medical care, in which patients talk to doctors through video calls, has been available in some countries for many years. In Japan, however, strict rules meant that it could be used only in limited situations.

The COVID-19 pandemic changed this situation. In 2020, the Japanese government temporarily allowed doctors to see new patients online so that people could avoid infection in crowded waiting rooms. Patients found that they could get a diagnosis without traveling or waiting, and they could receive their medicine by mail. In 2022, the government decided to make these rules permanent, and the number of clinics offering online services increased.

Despite its convenience, online medical care has its limits. Doctors cannot touch patients or use many medical tools through a screen, so it can be difficult to diagnose some illnesses accurately. There are also concerns about the privacy of patients' personal information. In addition, some elderly patients, who might benefit the most, are not comfortable using smartphones or computers. Experts say that online care should be used together with regular hospital visits, not as a complete replacement for them.

(6)Why was online medical care used only in limited situations in Japan?
正解は④。第1段落最終文 strict rules meant that it could be used only in limited situations の言い換え。①②③は本文にない。
(7)What did the Japanese government do in 2022?
正解は③。第2段落最終文に、2020年の一時的な措置を恒久化したとある。②は薬を郵送で受け取るのは患者。④はオンライン診療を行う診療所は増えたので逆。①は恒久化したので逆。
(8)What do experts say about online medical care?
正解は②。第3段落最終文に、通常の通院と併用すべきで完全な代わりにすべきではないとある。①は逆。③は本文にない。④は画面越しでは触れられないことが限界とされている。
