目安 4分Tiny Pieces of Plastic
Since the 1950s, the production of plastic has increased enormously because it is cheap, light, and durable. However, a large amount of plastic waste ends up in the ocean every year. For a long time, people mainly worried about large pieces of plastic, such as bottles and bags, which can trap sea animals or be mistaken for food by turtles and birds.
In the early 2000s, scientists began to pay attention to much smaller pieces called "microplastics," which are less than five millimeters long. Some microplastics are formed when larger plastic items are broken into tiny pieces by sunlight and waves. Others come from products such as clothes made from synthetic fibers, which release tiny threads when they are washed. Researchers have since found microplastics almost everywhere, from the deep ocean floor to Arctic ice, and even in drinking water and table salt.
Because microplastics are so small, they are very difficult to remove from the environment. They are eaten by fish and shellfish and can enter the food chain. Scientists are still studying whether they are harmful to human health. Meanwhile, some countries have banned the use of tiny plastic beads in products such as face wash and toothpaste, and many companies are trying to develop materials that break down naturally.

Yes. I think plastic packaging creates too much waste. Much of it ends up in the ocean and harms sea animals. Companies can use paper or other materials that are better for the environment instead.
