The Story of Instant Noodles

Instant noodles are eaten by billions of people around the world today, but they were invented only about seventy years ago. After World War II, food was scarce in Japan, and a businessman named Momofuku Ando saw long lines of people waiting in the cold to buy a bowl of ramen. He wanted to create a kind of noodle that could be stored for a long time and prepared quickly at home.

Ando worked alone in a small shed behind his house for about a year, trying many different methods. He failed again and again, but he eventually got an idea while watching his wife cook tempura. He realized that frying noodles in hot oil removed the water from them, so they could be kept for months. When hot water was added, the noodles became soft again. In 1958, he started selling the world's first instant noodles, called "Chicken Ramen."

At first, the product was considered expensive, but it soon became extremely popular. In 1971, Ando introduced Cup Noodles after he noticed that people in the United States broke the noodles into cups because they did not have ramen bowls. Today, more than 100 billion servings of instant noodles are eaten each year. They have even been sent into space, and they are often included in emergency supplies after natural disasters.

(6)Why did Ando want to create a new kind of noodle?
(7)How did Ando get his idea?
(8)What led to the invention of Cup Noodles?

🎙 Many people think that the first bicycles had pedals, but this is not true. In eighteen seventeen, a German man named Karl Drais built a two-wheeled machine made of wood. Riders sat on it and pushed the ground with their feet to move forward. Drais hoped his invention could replace horses, which were expensive to feed at the time. Pedals were added to bicycles several decades later.
