Why Esports Are Growing

Esports, or competitive video gaming, began in the 1970s and 1980s as small contests held at universities and game centers. For many years, video games were seen simply as a hobby for children, and few people imagined that they could become a professional sport. In the 2000s, however, faster Internet connections made it possible for players around the world to compete against each other online.

Since then, esports have grown rapidly. Major tournaments are now held in large stadiums, and millions of fans watch them live on streaming websites. Top players can earn large amounts of money from prize money and sponsors, and some universities in the United States even offer scholarships to talented gamers. Esports were also included as an official event at the 2022 Asian Games, which helped them gain more respect as a sport.

Despite their popularity, esports still face challenges. Many people argue that playing video games should not be called a sport because it does not require physical strength. Professional players also suffer from health problems such as back pain and wrist injuries caused by spending many hours in front of a screen. In addition, most players retire in their mid-twenties, so some experts say that teams should do more to help players prepare for their lives after esports.

(8)What do some experts say?
