長文読解(大問3形式)
目安 4分Space Tourism
For most of the history of space travel, only astronauts chosen and trained by governments were able to go into space. That began to change in 2001, when an American businessman paid about 20 million dollars to travel to the International Space Station on a Russian rocket. He became the world's first "space tourist," and his trip showed that ordinary people might one day be able to visit space.
Since then, several private companies have been developing rockets and spacecraft for tourists. In 2021, two companies successfully launched flights that took passengers to the edge of space. These trips lasted only about ten minutes, but passengers were able to float in zero gravity and see the curve of the Earth. The companies say that as the technology improves, the cost of tickets will come down and more people will be able to experience space.
However, space tourism has also been criticized. Each rocket launch releases large amounts of carbon dioxide and other gases into the atmosphere, and some scientists worry that frequent flights could harm the environment. Others argue that the money spent on trips for rich people would be better used to solve problems on Earth. Supporters, on the other hand, say that the technology developed for tourism may help scientists explore space in the future.
