Robots in Nursing Care

Japan's population is aging rapidly. Today, nearly 30 percent of the population is 65 or older, and the number of people who need nursing care is increasing every year. At the same time, there is a serious shortage of workers in the nursing care industry. The work is physically hard, and salaries are relatively low, so many care facilities have difficulty hiring and keeping enough staff.

To help, companies have developed various care robots. Some robots help caregivers lift patients from their beds, which reduces back pain among workers. Others are designed to communicate with elderly people. For example, a seal-shaped robot called Paro responds to touch and voice by moving its head and making sounds. Studies suggest that it can make elderly residents calmer and more cheerful, and it is now used in hospitals and care homes in Europe and the United States as well.

However, care robots are not yet widely used. Many of them are still expensive, and some staff members find them difficult to operate. In addition, some people feel that machines cannot replace human warmth and that elderly people need real human contact. Many experts therefore believe that robots should support caregivers rather than take their place. By leaving heavy physical tasks to machines, caregivers may be able to spend more time talking with the people they look after.
