Genderless Uniforms

In recent years, many schools in Japan have introduced genderless uniforms. Traditionally, boys wore pants and girls wore skirts, but now students at these schools can choose either style regardless of their gender. The number of such schools has increased rapidly over the past several years, and some local governments have encouraged all of their public schools to make the change. Many companies that produce school uniforms have also developed new designs.

The change was made partly to respect students who feel uncomfortable with the traditional rules, including those who do not identify with the gender they were given at birth. However, practical reasons are also important. Many female students prefer pants because they are warmer in winter and easier to move in when riding bicycles. Some parents also say that pants help protect students from people who secretly take photos on crowded trains.

Some schools have gone even further. They have started allowing students to choose between neckties and ribbons, and some have designed new jackets that can be worn by any student. However, the change has not always been smooth. In some schools, few girls actually chose pants at first because they worried about standing out. Supporters say that it is important to make every option seem normal, so that all students can feel comfortable at school.

Do you think students should be allowed to choose what they wear to school?

模範解答

Yes. I think students should be able to choose their clothes. Uniforms are often expensive, and some students feel uncomfortable in them. If students can wear what they like, they can express their personality.

はい。生徒は自分の服を選べるべきだと思います。制服は高価なことが多く、着心地が悪いと感じる生徒もいます。好きな服を着られれば、自分の個性を表現できます。
