目安 4分Water from the Air
Many regions of the world suffer from a lack of fresh water. According to the United Nations, about two billion people do not have access to safe drinking water. Climate change is making the situation worse, as droughts are becoming longer and more common in some areas. In many places, women and children must walk for hours every day to collect water, which leaves them little time for school or work.
To solve this problem, scientists are developing technologies that collect water from the air. One simple method uses large nets placed on hills in foggy areas. As fog passes through the nets, tiny drops of water gather and flow into containers. In Chile and Morocco, some villages have used this method to supply water for drinking and farming. Because the nets need no electricity, they are cheap to build and easy for local people to maintain.
More advanced machines can even pull water from dry desert air by using special materials that take in moisture and solar energy to release it. However, these technologies cannot yet produce large amounts of water, and fog nets work only in places where fog is common. Researchers are now working to improve the performance of these systems and lower their costs. If they succeed, the technologies may become an important resource for communities far from rivers and lakes.
