Overtourism

Overtourism refers to a situation in which too many tourists visit a place, causing problems for local residents and the environment. Famous cities such as Venice and Barcelona have experienced crowded streets, rising housing costs, and damage to historic buildings. In Barcelona, for example, many apartments have been turned into short-term rentals for tourists, which has made it difficult for local people to find homes at reasonable prices.

In response, some places have introduced new rules. In 2024, Venice started charging an entrance fee to day-trippers on busy days. In Japan, some popular places have also taken action. For example, one town near Mount Fuji put up a large screen to block a famous view because crowds of tourists were ignoring traffic rules and entering private property to take photos. Kyoto has also banned tourists from entering some private streets in the Gion area.

However, such rules alone may not be enough, and tourism is also important for local economies. Many shops, hotels, and restaurants depend on visitors. Experts therefore suggest encouraging tourists to visit less famous areas and to travel during quieter seasons. This could spread the benefits of tourism more evenly while reducing the burden on crowded places. Some regions are now promoting their own local attractions in order to draw visitors away from the most popular destinations.
