New Life for Old Crafts

Japan has more than 200 officially recognized traditional crafts, such as pottery, lacquerware, and dyed cloth. Many of them have been handed down from generation to generation for hundreds of years. However, these industries are now struggling. Their sales have dropped sharply since the 1980s because people's lifestyles have changed, and many craftspeople are elderly and have no one to continue their work after they retire.

To survive, some workshops are trying new approaches. For example, one ironware maker in Iwate began producing colorful teapots, which became popular in Europe. Other workshops work with designers to create modern products, such as smartphone cases and furniture, using traditional techniques. Some also welcome tourists for hands-on experiences, allowing visitors to try making crafts themselves. Many of these experiences have become especially popular among visitors from overseas.

These efforts are starting to produce results. The new products have attracted a younger generation of customers, and some young people have become interested in working as craftspeople. However, it takes many years of training to master traditional techniques, and trainees often earn little money during this period. To solve this problem, some local governments now provide financial support to young people who train under experienced craftspeople.

模範解答

Yes. I think traditional crafts are an important part of Japanese culture. However, many craftspeople cannot earn enough money. The government should give them financial support and help them sell their products to people overseas.

はい。伝統工芸は日本文化の重要な一部だと思います。しかし、多くの職人は十分な収入を得られていません。政府は彼らに資金援助をし、海外の人々に製品を売る手助けをすべきです。
