The clay model for a marble masterpiece. Marks left by the genius's fingers are still on it!
On a cloud, a nun leans back as if she has lost all her strength. Beside her stands a winged angel. This is a clay model made by the sculptor Bernini before he carved the marble statue 'The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa' in a church in Rome. It is about 47 centimeters tall and dates from around 1647. It is now in the State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, Russia.
Teresa was a Spanish nun of the 16th century, and she was made a saint in 1622. In her life story, she wrote that an angel came to her holding a burning golden arrow, and her heart was filled with God's great love. Bernini wanted to show that moment. With clay, he could change the shapes again and again with his hands as he planned the pose and the folds of the clothes.
The finished marble statue was placed in the Cornaro Chapel of Santa Maria della Vittoria in Rome around 1652. Light from a hidden window falls on golden rays behind the figures, so the chapel looks like a stage. Later, collectors began to treasure clay models like this one, and after a long journey this model came to Russia.

The surface of this clay model is said to still show marks where Bernini pressed and smoothed it with his fingers. The movements of his hands, which disappear in the marble, were baked into the clay. It is rare evidence of a masterpiece being born.
Look closely: the angel has no head, and part of an arm is missing too. Baked clay breaks easily, and these parts were lost over the years. In the marble version, the angel is famous for its gentle smile.
At the time, clay models were only tools on the way to a finished work, and few people kept them. In the 18th century, the Venetian collector Filippo Farsetti gathered many such models in Rome. His collection later went to Russia, and that is why we can see this one in the Hermitage today.
In the chapel with the marble statue, the side walls have places like theater boxes. Statues of the Cornaro family, who paid for the chapel, lean out to watch the miracle. Bernini turned sculpture, architecture and light into one stage.
