Bernini was born in Naples, the son of a sculptor, and moved to Rome as a boy. In his twenties he carved works like Apollo and Daphne. The marble seems to move and looks as soft as skin. Later he also worked as an architect. He designed the great bronze canopy inside St Peter's Basilica and the curved rows of columns around the square in front of it. The Fountain of the Four Rivers in Piazza Navona is his too. He lived to 81.
