Thrown into a fire and split in two! Reunited after 360 years.
Gentle mountains, trees by the river and small houses are painted only in ink. This is The Remaining Mountain, the first part of a long handscroll called Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains. Huang Gongwang painted it in the Yuan dynasty. This part is in the Zhejiang Provincial Museum in Hangzhou, China.
Huang Gongwang started painting seriously at around 50. He painted the scenery along the Fuchun River for a Taoist friend. Starting at about 79, he worked on it little by little for more than three years and finished it in 1350. He became known as one of the Four Masters of the Yuan, and this scroll is praised as one of the masterpieces of Chinese landscape painting.
In 1650, a collector who loved this scroll ordered it to be burned when he was dying. It was thrown into the fire. His nephew quickly pulled it out, but it had burned into two pieces. The short first part is this Remaining Mountain. The long second part, the Master Wuyong Scroll, is in the National Palace Museum in Taipei.

The owner, Wu Hongyu, wanted to burn the scroll so he could take it with him after death. His nephew rescued it from the fire. But the first part was cut away at the burned section, and the two pieces went different ways.
The Qing emperor Qianlong loved his copy of this scroll and wrote on it dozens of times. But it was a fake! The next year, the real one (the Master Wuyong Scroll) arrived. The emperor decided the real one was the fake.
In 2011, the National Palace Museum in Taipei held a special exhibition. The Remaining Mountain came from Zhejiang and was shown next to the Master Wuyong Scroll. It was the first time in about 360 years that the two parts were together.
The vertical text on the left calls this 'the finest work in our family's Meijing Studio'. It was written by Pan Jingshu, wife of the 20th-century collector Wu Hufan. Later, the painting went to the Zhejiang Provincial Museum.
