The standard explanation

Yoyogi Koen, or Yoyogi Park, is one of the largest parks in central Tokyo, right next to Harajuku Station and Meiji Jingu. On weekends, people come to picnic, jog, play music and enjoy the cherry blossoms or the yellow ginkgo trees. The land has an interesting past: it was the athletes' village for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics before it opened as a park in 1967.

A full paragraph you can read aloud

If you walk out of Harajuku Station and keep going past the entrance to Meiji Jingu, you'll reach Yoyogi Park, one of the biggest green spaces in central Tokyo. It covers about 54 hectares, and on a sunny weekend it's full of people having picnics, jogging, walking their dogs and practicing dance or music.

In spring, groups spread out blue tarps under the cherry trees for hanami, and in late autumn the ginkgo trees turn bright yellow. What many visitors don't know is the park's history. Before World War II, the land was an army training ground, and in 1910 it was where some of the first powered airplane flights in Japan took place.

After the war, it became housing for the US military, and in 1964 it was turned into the athletes' village for the Tokyo Olympics. The park finally opened on October 20th, 1967. I like that such a relaxed place carries so many layers of Tokyo's history.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

Q

Is Yoyogi Park part of Meiji Jingu?

No, they're right next to each other but separate. Meiji Jingu is a Shinto shrine with its own forest, and Yoyogi Park is a public park run by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. People often visit both on the same day.

Q

Is it a good place for hanami?

Yes, it's one of Tokyo's popular hanami spots, so it gets very crowded on spring weekends. Rules for things like alcohol and spreading out tarps can change from year to year, so it's best to check before you go.

Q

Why are there festivals there almost every weekend?

The park has an event area across the street from the main lawn, and it's often used for food and culture festivals, including ones run by other countries' communities. It's close to big stations, which makes it easy for crowds to come.
