Shinjuku station is the busiest railway station in the world, with well over three million passengers a day, and it has more than two hundred exits, which is why even Tokyo residents get lost in it. West of the station is a cluster of skyscrapers including the city hall, whose observation floors are free.
East of it is the shopping area, and north-east of that is Kabukicho. The name puzzles people, because there is no kabuki theater there. After the area burned in the war, the plan for rebuilding included a kabuki theater as the centerpiece, and the district was named for it in advance.
The theater was never built, but the name stayed. What grew instead was nightlife: bars, cinemas, restaurants, hosts and hostesses. It is safe to walk through, but do not follow anyone who approaches you on the street offering a bar.

The postwar rebuilding plan put a kabuki theater at the center of the district, and the name was given in advance. The theater was never built, but the name was already official.

QIs Kabukicho dangerous?
Walking through it is not dangerous, and it is busy and well lit. The real risk is being led into a bar by a tout and presented with a bill many times what you expected. Do not follow strangers who approach you.

QHow do I not get lost in the station?
Decide which side you want before you go underground: west for the skyscrapers, east for shopping, south for the bus terminal. Following the compass direction signs is more reliable than following exit numbers.

A common misunderstanding
MYTHKabukicho is named after a famous kabuki theater there.
FACTThere has never been a kabuki theater in Kabukicho. The name was chosen for a theater that the postwar rebuilding plan intended to build and never did.
