The standard explanation

Shibori is a Japanese dyeing technique. Before dyeing, you tie parts of the cloth with thread, fold it, or stitch it tightly. The dye can't reach those parts, so they stay white and make a pattern. It's used for kimono, yukata and tenugui, and today many people know the word shibori in English, too.

As a short speech

A full paragraph you can read aloud

Shibori is a traditional Japanese way of making patterns on cloth. Before the fabric goes into the dye, the craftsperson ties small sections with thread, folds it, or stitches it and pulls it tight. The dye can't get into those tight spots, so they stay the original color.

When the thread is removed, a pattern appears, like tiny dots, rings or wavy lines. It sounds like tie-dye, and it's related, but shibori can be very detailed. Some kimono have thousands of tiny tied dots, each done by hand.

The most famous area is Arimatsu and Narumi in Nagoya, where local production is said to have started in the early 1600s. Indigo shibori is especially popular, and I think its deep blue and white look very modern.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

Q

Is shibori the same as tie-dye?

They work in the same basic way, by blocking dye with tied or pressed areas. But shibori uses many different methods, such as stitching and folding, and the patterns can be very fine and planned.

Q

How long does a shibori kimono take?

A fully tied kimono can take months, because each tiny dot is tied by hand. That's why real shibori kimono are expensive.

Q

Can I try it myself?

Yes. Workshops in places like Arimatsu and Kyoto let you make a simple handkerchief or tenugui. Simple folding methods are easy for beginners.
