The standard explanation

The Nippon Budokan stands in Kitanomaru Park in central Tokyo. It opened in October 1964 and hosted judo at the Tokyo Olympics that year, when judo became an Olympic sport for the first time. It still holds major martial arts tournaments, but it is just as famous for concerts, and many musicians dream of playing there.

A full paragraph you can read aloud

The Nippon Budokan is a large arena in Kitanomaru Park in central Tokyo. It was built for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, when judo became an Olympic sport for the first time, and it opened on October 3rd that year. The building has eight equal sides, so it looks quite different from most stadiums.

As its name says, it was built as a hall for budo, or Japanese martial arts, and it still hosts national championships in sports such as judo, kendo and karate. But many people around the world know it for music. In 1966, the Beatles played here, and some people complained that rock music did not belong in a hall for martial arts.

Since then, playing at the Budokan has become a goal for many musicians, both Japanese and foreign. When the Tokyo Olympics were held in 2021, after being postponed for a year, the Budokan hosted judo again, along with karate. I like that it is a place where tradition and pop culture sit side by side.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

Q

Is the Budokan only for martial arts?

No. It was built for budo, and big judo and kendo championships are still held there. But it is also one of Tokyo's best-known concert halls, and it can hold more than 10,000 people.

Q

Why is playing at the Budokan such a big deal?

Ever since the Beatles played there in 1966, it has been seen as a stage for top artists. For many Japanese bands, a Budokan show is a sign that they have really made it.
