The standard explanation

Nikko Toshogu, in the mountains north of Tokyo, enshrines Tokugawa Ieyasu, the shogun who unified Japan in 1600 and whose family ruled for two and a half centuries. His grandson rebuilt the shrine on a lavish scale in 1636. Almost every surface carries carving, lacquer or gold leaf, which is the opposite of what people expect a Shinto shrine to look like.

As a short speech

A full paragraph you can read aloud

Nikko Toshogu is a shrine in the mountains north of Tokyo, and it will overturn whatever image of a Shinto shrine you arrived with. Most shrines are plain wood, unpainted, deliberately understated. This one is covered: thousands of carvings, brilliant lacquer, gold leaf on almost every surface. The reason is political.

It enshrines Tokugawa Ieyasu, who won the battle that ended a century of civil war and founded a government that lasted more than two hundred and fifty years. His grandson rebuilt the shrine in 1636 on an enormous scale, and the display was a statement about the family's power as much as an act of reverence. Two carvings are famous beyond Japan.

The three monkeys that see, hear and speak no evil are here, part of a panel about raising a child. And there is a sleeping cat, small and easy to miss, over a gateway. There is an old saying that you should not say the word splendid until you have seen Nikko. Autumn is the celebrated season and also the most crowded.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

QWhy is a shogun enshrined as a deity?

He was given a posthumous divine title and enshrined, which was a way of placing the family's authority beyond challenge. Shinto has a long practice of enshrining people, and powerful figures have been treated this way before and since.

QAre the three wise monkeys originally Japanese?

The idea appears in several cultures, and the wordplay works particularly well in Japanese, where the negative ending sounds like the word for monkey. The Nikko carving is the most famous depiction rather than the origin.

QIs it a shrine or a temple?

It is a Shinto shrine, but the site mixes Buddhist elements, including a pagoda, because the two religions were administered together until the Meiji period. Nikko is a good place to see that older blending.

A common misunderstanding

MYTHShinto shrines are always plain, unpainted wood.
