The standard explanation

Mashiko yaki is pottery from the town of Mashiko in Tochigi Prefecture, north of Tokyo. It is thick and a little heavy, with simple shapes and warm brown, black, and green glazes. Kilns there are said to date from the 1850s, when they made jars and pots for kitchens. It became famous after the potter Shoji Hamada settled there in 1924.

As a short speech

A full paragraph you can read aloud

Mashiko yaki is a kind of pottery made in Mashiko, a small town in Tochigi Prefecture, about two hours from Tokyo. It is thick, solid, and a little rough to the touch, and the glazes are usually earthy colors like brown, black, and deep green.

The kilns are said to have started in the 1850s, and for a long time they made plain things for the kitchen, such as storage jars and mortars. That changed after 1924, when the potter Shoji Hamada moved there. He was a leading figure in the mingei, or folk craft, movement, which praised everyday objects made by unknown craftspeople.

In 1955 he was named one of Japan's first Living National Treasures, and Mashiko became a place potters from all over Japan wanted to work. Today the town holds a big pottery fair every spring and fall, with hundreds of tents. What I like about Mashiko ware is that it is not meant to sit on a shelf. It is meant to be used every day.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

Q

Is it safe to use Mashiko ware in the microwave?

It depends on the piece. Many everyday plates and bowls are fine, but anything with gold or silver paint should not go in. It is best to ask the shop when you buy it.

Q

Why is it so thick and heavy?

The local clay is coarse and not very sticky, so it is hard to make thin walls with it. The thickness also comes from its history as kitchen ware that had to be tough.

Q

When is the best time to visit Mashiko?

Many people go during the pottery fair, which is held around Golden Week in spring and around early November in fall. It gets very crowded, but you can meet the potters and buy directly from them.
