The standard explanation
A kyusu is the teapot used for everyday Japanese green tea. Most have a straight handle on the side instead of a loop at the back. You hold the handle, keep the lid in place with your other hand, and pour a little into each cup in turn so that every cup tastes the same. A built-in strainer keeps the leaves inside.
As a short speech
A full paragraph you can read aloud
A kyusu is the small teapot Japanese people use for green tea. The first thing visitors notice is the handle. Instead of a loop at the back, most kyusu have a straight handle sticking out from the side.
You hold it with one hand and keep the lid in place with the other, which makes it easy to pour a little at a time. When you serve several people, you pour back and forth between the cups so that each one gets the same strength, and you pour out every last drop.
If water is left inside, the leaves keep steeping and the next round turns bitter. Tokoname in Aichi and Yokkaichi in Mie are well known for making them. I think it's a good example of a tool shaped around one simple job.
Questions people actually ask
And how to answer them.
Why is the handle on the side?
It lets you tilt the pot with a small turn of your wrist while your other hand holds the lid down. That makes it easy to pour small amounts into several cups.
Do Japanese people still use a kyusu at home?
Many do, but fewer than before. Bottled tea and tea bags are so common now that some younger people have never owned one.
Why pour a little into each cup instead of filling one at a time?
The tea gets stronger toward the end of the pour. If you fill one cup first, the last cup ends up much stronger, so you go back and forth to share it evenly.
