The standard explanation
In July 1853 four American warships under Commodore Perry anchored off Uraga near Edo and delivered a letter demanding that Japan open ports to trade. Two of the ships were steam-powered and none could be turned away. Perry returned the next year with more ships, and the shogunate signed a treaty. The word kurofune has since come to mean any outside force that changes things.
As a short speech
A full paragraph you can read aloud
In July 1853 four American warships appeared off Uraga, at the mouth of Edo Bay, under Commodore Matthew Perry. He carried a letter from the President demanding that Japan open ports, and he refused to move to Nagasaki where foreign ships were supposed to go.
Two of his ships ran on steam and could move against the wind, which no Japanese vessel could do. The shogunate had no way to remove them and no authority to decide quickly, so it took the letter and asked him to come back.
He returned in 1854 with a larger squadron, and the treaty that followed ended two centuries of controlled contact. The name comes from the tarred black hulls. What I find more interesting than the ships is the word: in Japanese today, kurofune means any outside shock that forces a change people had been avoiding.
Questions people actually ask
And how to answer them.
QWhy were the ships black?
The hulls were coated with tar as a preservative, and coal smoke added to the impression. It was not a deliberate intimidation color, though the effect on people watching from shore was the same.
QDid Japan fight?
No. The shogunate had no navy capable of resisting and knew what had happened to China in the Opium War. It played for time, took the letter and negotiated the following year.
QIs kurofune still used as a word?
Constantly, in business writing. A foreign company entering a protected Japanese market is described as a kurofune, and the phrase carries both threat and the sense that change was overdue.
A common misunderstanding
MYTHJapan had no contact with the outside world until Perry arrived.
FACTTrade and information had continued through Nagasaki with the Dutch and Chinese, and through Tsushima, Satsuma and the north. What Perry forced was open ports and treaties on American terms.
